General Christian. Upon the Duke of Athole's first visit
to the Isle of Mann. a verse was added to this elegy,
couched in the most respectful terms, earnestly cautioning
his Grace, from giving heed to false advisers, alluding to
a Native of the Isle, said to be at the time Much in
the confidence of the present Duke.

A great injury appears to have been sustained by
the Lords of the Isle at the commencement of the last
century, from an injudicious Measure termed : The
act of Settlement; by the which, the very uncertain
tenures of Many of the land-holders were confirmed
for what would certainly seem to be a very inadequate
consideration, but, which the Necessities of the then
Earl of Derby induced him to accept. This Measure
was brought about by the Mediation of Bishop
Wilson, between the Lord and People.

On the failure of the Stanley line in the
year 1737 - the noble family of Athole who then
succeeded, would seem not to have been well informed
as to their Ancient Rights, and, altho' their first
Governor (Murray) appears to have been a very intell-
igent Man - causing the old laws to be revised, and
new-modelled, yet, little seems to have been done
to put the undoubted hereditary Rights of that noble
family on a proper footing. This forbearance May
