To my Govern^r and the rest of my Councel in my
Isle of mann.
Notwithstanding my earnest desire of having all
my people easie, yet I cannot expect to see the lasting
fruits of a happy settlement untill I have taken care that
the honour of God be secured by incouraging Religion &
vertue & by discountenancing all such vices and Immo=
ralityes as are a scandal to all Christianity and a weight
under w^ch no people can thrive & prosper Long.
These are therefore to require you and all persons concerned
in the Government of that my Isle whether Ecclesiastical,
Military or civil that you heartily concur and assist each
other in the discountenancing vice and Immorality.
And because drunkenness and expensive tipling in a country
which complaines so much of pove ty is equally sinfull & un=
speakably scandalous, and prophane swearing and cursing
and the neglect of the publick Worship of God are cremes
less pardonable amongst people who do so much and visibly
depend upon Gods providence both at sea and Land for a
subsistance, I do therefore expect from every one of you
that you set your selves ag^st these vices in particular
and all other disorderly ~~and~~ practices w^ch are ~~offensive~~ so offensive
towards God and scandalous to all people professing chris=
tianity.
In order to this I do hereby require all persons who have
any imployment of proffit or trust und^r me do live soberly &
regularly that vice & Irreligion may have no countenance
from those who are appointed to suppress them, and if there any
such psons whether civil or Military who are not ^hereby re=
strained I do expect to be informed thereof that care may be
taken to supply their places with men of better principles &
more vertuous lives.
And I do hereby require the Bishop and Clergy of my said Isle
as they are bound by the Duty they owe to God and as they will
answer for the souls committed to their charge that they fore=
warn their people at all times & especially at such times ~~as~~
as this Letter shall be appointed to be read in their respective
